Located along the Greater Drakensberg Escarpment in Mpumalanga, the Panorama Route is one of the most enchanting and scenic destinations in South Africa. Extending along the Blyde River Canyon, there is no clear start or finish to this picturesque 285km drive, but rather a series of must-see attractions, viewpoints, and towns, dotted in various spots along the escarpment.
In celebration of the Month of Love, we’ve put together a list of the most romantic towns on the Panorama Route. If you’re out of ideas for Valentine’s Day, or simply looking to take a unique trip with your significant other – pack a bag, hop in the car, and explore this incredible region.
Graskop
Fondly known as the ‘gateway to the Panorama Route’, many consider the town of Graskop to be the unofficial ‘start’ to the drive. Perched 1400m above sea level, near Kowyn’s Pass, it is a great place from which to explore the various landscapes for which the area is most known.
6km north from Graskop, on the R534 lies The Pinnacle Rock – a 30m column of cracked rock, formed millions of years ago, which juts into the sky, towering above the lush, surrounding forest. Next up along the R534 is the aptly named God’s Window – arguably the most breath-taking viewpoint along the route. Perched on the edge of the escarpment, 900m up, it provides seemingly-endless views over the vast Mpumalanga lowveld below.
The final stop along the R534 will leave you in complete, 360° awe. From Wonder View, gaze upon the rolling hills, towering cliffs, and vast plains. Sights of this grandeur are even better when shared, and will lead you to feel closer than ever to your loved one.
Dullstroom
As one of the coldest towns in South Africa, Dullstroom is the ideal place to snuggle up, and get close! Spend many a dreamy evening in front of the roaring fireplace, glass of red wine in hand. Alternatively, embark upon a romantic horse ride for two, book yourselves into a blissful spa, or simply explore the quaint village shops and restaurants. 
As it is known as ‘South Africa’s Fly-Fishing Capital’, a trip to Dullstroom would be incomplete without attempting to land a trout in one of the many dams in the surrounding countryside.

Sabie

Nothing spells out romance like a gently cascading waterfall, and Bridal Veil Falls is an exquisite sight to behold. This romantic-sounding waterfall is located only 6km from the town, and is a lofty 70m high. Plus, if the name isn’t a good omen, then we don’t know what is!
