During these warmer summer months there simply nothing better than enjoying a long and relaxing lunch with those you love. With it’s quaint, countryside setting and long list of enticing restaurants catering to almost every culinary style, Dullstroom features various great lunch spots.
To make things a bit easier for you, we’ve selected just four of the best.
The Terrace at Walkersons Hotel & Spa
Boasting stunning views over the trout-filled dams and surrounding hillside, Walkersons’ Terrace Restaurant is the perfect spot to spend a leisurely summer lunch. To much delight, the new, less formal, but no less decadent menu was launched late last year. Tasty offerings include a chicken and prawn curry, slow braised oxtail, a pulled pork toasted sandwich and a tian of trout set on a toasted bagel. Round your meal off with a mouth-watering cheese cake, one of Walkerson’s world-famous scones, or a bowl of ice cream.
Mrs Simpsons
A list about restaurants in Dullstroom wouldn’t be complete without mentioning the ever-popular and vibrant Mrs Simpson’s Restaurant. Owned and run by Dullstroom locals Stephen De Meyer and Bryan Wolmarans, this eclectic eatery was listed in DINE 2008’s Top 100 Restaurants in South Africa. Serving both locals and visitors alike since 2005, Mrs Simpson’s features a bold and exciting menu. A host of familiar South African favourites include Durban lamb curry, traditional Cape bobotie and, for the Dullstroom locals, fresh deboned trout stuffed with almonds, breadcrumbs, garlic and lemon.
Duck & Trout Restaurant & Pub
One of Dullstroom’s oldest establishments, the Duck & Trout Restaurant & Pub boasts a laid-back, friendly atmosphere and a delectable selection of traditional fare. Once a working dairy, the building was converted into a pub back in 1994. During sunny summer days, dinners can be found lounging on the outside wooden deck, while during the colder winter months the restaurant and pub are lovingly warmed by roaring log fires. Along with authentic wood-burned pizza from their Pizzeria, the Duck & Trout serves up an array of hearty pasta dishes, various lighter pub lunches, and many tasty main meals such as duck and cherry pie, slow-cooked oxtail and honeyed pork chops.
Anvil Ale Brewery
Dullstroom’s first and only microbrewery, Anvil Ale, was opened up in 2010 by couple Theo and Sari De Beer. Along with brewing a diverse selection of beers – from ales to anvils – it also offers up a range of hearty meals to be enjoyed either in the sunlit garden or in the cozy stone pub. The daily food menu includes mouth-watering options like trout quiche, a German sausage platter, a wholesome veggie soup and the infamous Boozy Cake.
