Situated way up on the Steenkampsberg Mountain Range, and boasting a scattering of beautiful water features, Dullstroom is one of the most picturesque towns in South Africa. Restaurants, pubs and shops are designed to imbue pointed-stone and wooden log homes, making the main street a delightful sight to behold. Take advantage of all this natural and man-made beauty by bringing your camera along on your next, or first, trip to Dullstroom.
Commonly known as the fly-fishing capital of South Africa, Dullstroom attracts a constant stream of experienced fishermen and women throughout the year. If you fall into this category, then make sure to bring along a good selection of rods, reels, tackle, and fly-fishing ties, on your next trip to Dullstroom. Arming yourself with the best equipment will seriously up your chances for a successful weekend of trout fishing. If you’re unsure about what ties to pack, have a look at our handy infographic.
Lying 2097m above sea level and a sub-alpine climate, travellers to Dullstroom can expect rapid weather changes and a misty atmosphere. While weather is known to be generally cool and crisp, experiencing ‘four seasons in one day’ is common. Be prepared for any eventuality in this fickle town by packing a range of different clothes. Jeans, jackets, thick socks, and closed shoes are welcomed, as are shorts, t-shirts, slops and hats.
Dullstroom, and the surrounding region, is home to a vast array of bird species, most of which can be spotted if you acquire a decent set of binoculars. Waterbirds are the primary suspects, which cluster around the innumerable lakes and dams in the area. Species include herons, Egyptian Geese, Kingfishers, Sacred Ibis’ and Spurwing Geese. Open grassland species include pipits, cranes, and francolin, while birds of prey most often glimpsed include snake eagles, fish eagles and the gorgeous Secretary Birds.
Walkersons Hotel & Spa is just one of the many places where you can explore the scenic beauty of Dullstroom by foot. Walking and hiking trails snake their way around the Walkersons estate, offering unique views of the hotel and countryside.
If you’re looking for more of a challenge, the two-day Ama Poot Poot Hiking Trail is a fantastic experience, while the three to five day Num-Num Hiking Trail is one of the most popular in the country.
